Leadership
Definition: When someone takes the initiative to encourage a team/self to perform at his or her best potential. A leader is someone who is prepared to approach conflict wit an open-mind and is willing to take risks.
Criteria for effective Leadership:
When I think about leadership I think about the time when I was captain of my softball team in High School. My school was not very well known for our “wins” but mostly for our “losses”. At the time I probably did not realize how big of an influence I was to the rest of the team but looking back, I realize that I was able to set an environment in which optimism ruled. Whenever our team lost, we would not be upset, I would always tell every team member something that they did great that day and they would feel good about themselves. In return, when I felt that I did poorly on the field the rest of the team would remind me about the times that I did really well on the field. If someone got to second base, you would hear a compliment, if someone made a home run the whole bench went wild, and when someone struck out we would all line up to high five our team member. I believe that as a team we accomplished this optimism, and as a leader, I encouraged optimism among us. I wasn’t just given the leadership position of captain of the softball team, but I set an example by always performing at my 100% in the field and motivating the team to do the same. In return, we all supported each other and despite the losses we were still happy of our performance.

- Ethical

- Organization
- Self-less Service

Artifact for Leadership 2:
Sometimes we have to realize that people can be leaders with out having a title. A leader can be someone who motivates others but is not necessarily the captain of a team, or the President of an organization. A leader can simply be a role model that inspires others to perform at their best. Personally, I currently find myself in the position where I am a leader but don't necessarily hold a title for it. When I began attending Texas A&M University I never really saw it as an inspiration toward others. Although, I am the first Aggie in my entire family I never really thought about persuading the rest of my family to also attend Texas A&M. However, after my first year away from home I started realizing how much it meant to my family for me to have gone to Texas A&M, but what stood out to me the most was the reaction and admiration that my little cousins, Karla and Martin, had toward me. My two little cousins were excited to see me when I went back home and initially begged me to switch schools and attend the University located back home. However, as time passed by my two little cousins wanted to hear about what I was doing at Texas A&M and their curiosity to know more led them to convince their parents to skip school and come with my parents to visit me in College Station. After that visit they both hugged me and said "Olga, I can't wait to come to A&M and do what you do". It was in that moment that I realized how much love we share with each other but also how much they actually look up to me. I am the type of person that likes to help others perform at their best and persuade them to take on new opportunities and because of that I believe that my two little cousins, Karla and Martin, enjoy talking to me about their goals and aspirations. Although they are both still very young, I can see how much they want to grow up, go to college and become successful. Therefore, I do my best to do things that can inspire them even in the smallest ways. I want to continue being an inspiration to them and by leading through example I believe that they will be able to one day realize the many amazing things they can accomplish in their life.
