Managing
Definition: Management is being able to accomplish any sort of short-term and long-term goals while dedicating time to self, family, partner, and close friends.
Criteria for effective Management:
When I think about management I think about the above criteria. I also think back on how I currently manage my school, organization, and personal life. Being part of ALPFA has opened so many opportunities for me. I have accepted an Co-Op Offer with Texas Instruments thanks to this organization, but I have also learned how to professionally develop myself, make my resume perfect, and how to successfully undergo interviews. Of course, this was all not given to me. I had to work hard and set goals that I wanted to accomplish both as a member and as the current Vice President of External-Affairs. The amount of responsibility that comes from being VPE is tremendous. I constantly have to be sending e-mails, making phone calls, attend meetings, and organize events. At first I struggled a lot to balance the time I dedicated to VPE responsibilities, school, and personal life. However, when I set time to reflect on how I was managing my time I realized that ALPFA was taking over my life but not in a good way! I noticed that I hardly called my mother, hardly spent time with my significant other, and hardly had time for myself. This needed to change so I decided to set goals on what I wanted to accomplish in both my personal life and in ALPFA. I dedicated myself to have a phone call with my mother at least once a day, have weekly dates with my significant other, and to pamper myself by shopping or doing my nails. For ALPFA I set the goal to only spend time writing e-mails for an hour a day and plan for any event a week in advance. Then, for school, I dedicated myself to keep track of when assignments were due and when an exam approached, make school come first not ALPFA. I did all this by keeping an agenda and listing things that have to be done. Now, I can truly say that I carry a balance in my life. Although it may get difficult at times, I still make sure to get back on track and keep motivated to perform my best at school, enjoy myself with those I love, and give back to an organization that has given me a lot.
